Alright so i have a 1987 ranger 2.9 4x4 manual trans. Could someone help me with this? How do i check to see if i am having rear end trouble without taking off the cover? i just noticed that when i take off or stop it feels like i am taking up some slack some where but there is no vibration or howling noise i jacked up the rear tires and i can move both tires in and out about a 1/2 inc or so and i also noticed that when i spin 1 tire there is a little bit of time before the other tire starts to rotate also when i move the drive shaft up and down there is a little play or movement but i can't move the shaft in and out. does it sound like anything is worn out or does it sound normal or could something else be the problem? Front breaks and wheel bearings are in great shape and i am only using my rear wheel drive not my front. If rear diff is the problem is it expensive to repair and is it something i can tackle my self?

I didn't think a rear shaft could move 1/2 inch in & out without the c-clip falling out inside the diff :icon_confused:

Up to 1/8" in & out movement is usually considered normal (the play comes from wear of the limited slip clutches). More than that you should replace your clutch stacks.

Any play AT ALL at the pinion flange (driveshaft input) is bad though. Having found play there it's time to look into it for sure. If it's toasted pretty good, it's usually cheaper to just get another axle from a wrecker than try to rebuild yours. Just make sure it has the same gear ratio so it matches your front.

yes it is more like an1/8 inch for sure looking more close but definately some movement when i move the rear end of the d shaft and it's not coming from the u joints maybe i should investigate further but i did find out where my issue was it was the right rear wheel cylinder was shot i replaced last night shoes included on both sides and much better i am gonna give it the real test on the way to work in a few and let you know.
