hey, im trying to figure out how to replace the block heater in my 1990 ford ranger, has a 2.9l and 2wd.

Welll.... I'm not too sure where the problem lies. Pop out the old one and replace with the new one. Follow the wire if you don't know exactly where it's located. Use a flat head screw driver, punch in one side. If you drive a hole in it so much the better. Once out clean the hole with some fine grit sand paper. Use a little rtv sealant and tap in the new one, use a socket that just fits inside the rim. If it's a rubber style replacement it's even easier and you don't need sealant.

If you can't access the old one, leave it and exchange a frost plug in another area that you can reach.

Other options include using an inline heater. They go in the line going into the cab heater. Also you can try a magnetic heater, they attach to the oil pan [as long as the pan is steel].
Good luck,

Richard
