I don't remember what its called, but there is a gray box on the distributer that gave some of those years fits. It would heat up and kill the engine and it wouldn't start for, like you say, about an hour. I had to replace the unit on my 84 a few times before I did my swap.
that would be the TFI module, which is also a good place to check given those symptoms. but i would also be checking fuel pressure.
