this is not my truck so please dont shoot me for being this stupid.

my papaws wife left her truck in 4lo and drove it up to around 75mph and now the 4wd doesnt work. she said she flips the switch but nothing happens. i cant examine the truck because its a couple hours away so i cant give the best info. if anybody has any idea what the problem is based on the limited info available then i would greatly appreciate the advice.

ps forgive her she is old

Tell her to put it in neutral first? And wait a second.

Does the shift motor work at all? If it's like mine...the shift motor can still be working but not engaging the front end....that'll be the electronic clutch in the t-case that's gone for a crap(which i could see happening if she ran it in 4lo for that long that fast). That falls under major t-case surgery if that's what's going on.

If the motor doesn't work at all...then I'd start with changing that first.

I didn't think you could run a ranger that fast in ( 4 low ) with out BLOWING the motor!!!! ( I would like to have seen it to believe it )

Anyways on to your POSSIBLE problem, the ONLY way to disengage 4 low is to stop, put foot on brake, put in nuetral, flip switch out of 4x4, put back in drive and goooooooooooo.

Once again, the only way to take your truck OUT of 4x4 low is to, stop and put foot on brake,,,,,then put the truck in neutral,,,,,,,then flip the switch out of 4x4,,,,,,then put in drive,,,,,then take foot off of brake and gooooooo.

If your 4 wheel drive is not working at all, well then I am not sure what could be wrong and I am sure others will chime in.

Are you sure she is not ( STUCK ) in 4x4 low ??

that is how fast she told me she was going i just took it to be true based on what she said. she has had the truck since new and lives in an area that gets snow so im mostly sure she knows how to operate her 4wd, or at least she should so i think something is screwed up big time but im not a transfercase expert she said it wont go into 4wd not that it was stuck in 4wd

thanks for all the ideas guys

gonna have to agree with ranger here. the revs needed to do 75 in 4 low are off the charts. as far as the actual problem at hand, good luck with that.

If she actually accomplished what she claims (and I'm not convinced she did) then the heat could have fried many things in the transfer case and 4x4 system.

My truck tops out at 35 in 4 low. That is the absolute max she will go. Mechanically and electronically speaking, I very highly doubt the computer would have allowed her to rev the engine high enough to make 75 MPH. She may have gotten that fast in 4 hi.

Have them unplug the shift motor and plug it back in a few times. Sometimes crap just gets in the connector. If it still isn't working then, then have them take the motor off and flip the switch, see if it moves. If it does, tell them to get a pair of pliers and grab the little nub coming out of the case and try to rotate it both directions. It should have some resistance, but not much. If it takes a lot of effort to move, the case is jammed, if it spins freely the case is broken.

The break-away torque spec for those is 35 NM or about 15 ft-lbs. Roughly the equivalent of lifting a 5 lb bag of sugar. I've found that most properly working t-cases need much less force to move, but won't spin freely or just using fingers.

thanks fellas ill call up there in the morning and tell pap what you guys told me. i never did like the woman i think she is crazy
