My Ranger won't turn over it's engine when I'm trying to start.
I've got power on the battery, we even tried with jumpstart cables from another car.
When I turn the key, all I hear is a click...
Is the starter gone? Or just the relay?

We managed to push it to start.

So when we got it running, the car was shaking badly in turns. I'm thinking it was because I had to turn the car around before we could push it. Maybe some steering oil leakage or just air in that system?

I have to get this fixed, it's my only car!

Thanx

Update: fuse and relay seems to be fine, but the solenoid doesn't click.
Any good way to test that?

jump the solonoid terminals if it starts its a solonoid if not its a starter.

Thanx :)
Is the solenoid placed right above (or together with) the starter?
It's a 2000 XLT 2,5 petrol engine. Quite a tight fit down there...

When mine did this it was because there was corrosion in my battery terminals. It wasn't very noticeable, but cleaning the terminals made a world of difference.

Terminals on the solenoid seems to be corroded, but it was kind of hard to see...

Turn the headlights on and try to start- if the lights dim down when you hit the key, it is starving for power and likely bad connections somewhere, cables, or bad battery. If it clicks once and no dim, probably the solenoid. If nothing, check the neutral safety switch (if auto) or your clutch switch if manual. You can take the starter off and power it up direct with jumper cables and see if you can get it to spin that way. If it won't work with the cables that bitch is bad.

We removed the starter this morning. The jumpercable between the solenoid and the starter was realy bad, but I don't think thats the main issue here, since the solenoid doesn't operate. I'll get a tech to look at it.

Where is the clutchswitch placed? By the clutch-pedal?

Update: got a new starter, problem solved.

Now for the powersteering, when we pushed the car, I had to turn the steeringwheel all over to the left when the engine was not running. Now it shakes a lot when I turn, but mostly to the right. This got better when I drove around and kept turning hard right and hard left, but it's still shaking a bit.
Any idea what else I can do to make the steering smooth again? (yes, there is enough fluid)

try putting a different nut behind the wheel:icon_rofl:
