Doing the 4.0 clutch swap on my 88 ranger 4x4 with fm146 trans and i got it all back together but when i went to start it the starter is making a real bad banging sound when i turn the key. like it is hitting the flywheel real hard just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to fix it.

You need a starter for a 4.0 manual.

it is a 4.0 manual starter at least thats what it said when i bought it

Then the plate in between the transmission and the engine needs to be trimmed where the starter fits in. That plate is set up for the smaller clutch. It's going to be a real bear to trim that out with the transmission in place, but a dremel tool should work. It may not look real pretty, but at least it will work.

it was trimmed. Can you tell the difference between a manual and auto by looking at it because i am going to get a couple pics in about an hour

yes you can. A manual trans starter is shorter than an auto one. Other than what I've mentioned I can't think of anything else... Unless you mistakenly got another auto starter in a manual starter box.

i am going to get another one from advance and see if it still does the same thing if it does ill just take it back.
