need help quick 460 question

Ok, a friend of mine has a chance to buy a clean 80 f250 4x4 cheap. problem is the 351 modified is bad . he has a brand new 460 on the engine stand but we need to know if the 351 flywheel will work on the 460 as the truck has a 4 speed and the 460 has an auto flywheel on it.
 
Nope, it won't even be close to fitting the crankshaft. Hit a boneyard & find one for that 460 since Ford put 'em in the F250's & F350's in the 80's.

FYI, a 390 flywheel will fit the 429/460 crankshaft, I ran one on my 429 & it worked like a charm.
 
1980 F350 with a 460

Hi: I swapped a 460 into my F350 4wd about 10 years ago. For motor mounts, use the Advance Adapter conversion mounts, but they will not stand up to the big block torque. You need to put a piece of chain from the block to the frame on the drivers side to restrict the motor movement. A remote oil filter is needed because the 460 filter is in the wrong spot for the clearance hole in the frame crossmember. Exhaust manifolds from a 1985 E350cube van will connect directly to the y pipe from an 1982 or 83 F250/350 that came with a 460. Napa and others have this pipe. 460 stick shift flywheels and bellhousings are hard to find. The FE flywheel will fit, but in any case, it will be necessary to match balance the new flywheel to the flexplate that came with your 460. 300 ci six has the same bellhousing pattern as the 385 series (429/460). 460 engines came with their valve timing retarded by about 9 degrees. get an aftermarket timing chain and sprockets that fixes this. It really wakes up the motor. You may have to get creative with accessory drives and brackets. the 351 /400 radiator works ok, but get the 3 core verson. Swap is definetly worth it as long as gas mileage is not a concern.

I've done this swap a few times. You need a manual thowout style ctutch for your 460 being the truck is not a hydro clutch (ford went to hydro clutch on 460 after 82). Therefore you need an internal balenced motor (pre 82) You will want a 360 or 390 flywheel but make sure its got the same tooth count as yours (there are 2 diff FE motor tooth counts). You can reuse your 351M/ 400 bellhousing on the 460. But you will need to get new mounts. You can go buy the rubber mount at the auto parts for say an 85 year ford truck but the frame bracket should be changed for everything to work right. You will also need a rear sump oil pan and truck exhaust manifolds. The pan adn manifolds can come from a van with a 460 and you also should grab the accessorys and brackets while you are there. 300 ci six has the same bellhousing pattern as the 385 series (429/460).

No, it doesn't.

The 300cid/4.9 inline six uses the Windsor/Small block bellhousing pattern.

The "M" "FE/FT" and "385" engines all use the same "Big block"
bellhousing pattern

As for motor mounts? frankly I'd use stock FORD F-350/450
7.5liter motor mounts.

They DO hold up to 460 torque.

As the '89 F450 7.5liter 5sp dump truck my buisness partner bought
new is still running with it's factory engine mounts.

I6 / 460 bellhousing oops

Sorry about the mistake regarding the 300i6 bellhousing. I remember now that I re-used my 351m/400 bellhousing. I used the conversion mounts because they bolted up to the 351/400 frame brackets. I think the '82-83 mounts needed to go on 82-83 frame brackets, which I don't think would have fit my '80 frame without a bunch of fabrication. It's been working great for 10 years of plowing snow in Buffalo NY with that little piece of chain. The current F450/550 trucks weren't around when I started that project, so I don't know about using those mounts. I used the larger flywheel and re-drilled it on the Bridgeport mill to take a 12 inch clutch. --PM
