I purchased a 1997 ford ranger with what I thought was a mustang engine at least that's what the kid I bought it from said. Anyways I really like this truck but I'm having problems indentifying the engine. I've come to the conclusion that its a 96 5.0 from an explorer. I can't get it inspected because of the egr valve. I googled the egr valve that was on there before andd 97 explorer came up but the engine I'm finding is a 96. I purchased a 97 egr valve and now its running worse than the one that was on it. So I purchased a 96 valve but now I'm running into the problem of where to connect the egr tube. Because there is no where to connect on the 96 valve. Ford dealership won't touch it because its a modded engine. . I'm so confused and stressed. Someone help me please.

Mid MY '97 was the start of the external EGR tube and followed through till the end of the 5.0 Windsor in the Explorer's in 01.

So, you've if you've got an external EGR tube going to the right hand exhaust manifold, you've probably got a later '97 or newer engine (or at least manifold sets) rather than a '96/early '97.

On that setup, the DPFE sensor is a very common cause of EGR faults
