Me and my Dad just swapped in a 92 2.9 into my 87 Ranger. We used the 87 harness and disconnected and plugged off the EGR because that's how it was on the 92. The EGR isnt the problem because it ran the same before and after to took it out.

Here is the problem, which I think might be the fuel filter or maybe the main fuel pump (dual tank setup, two filters also). The truck would start up fine and run like normal, it would run until we shut it off, once it was shut off we could not start it back up again. We switched to the front tank and it started up again and would run till we turned it off but it would not start up again after. If we leave it sitting for a while, a few hours, it sometimes works again. The guy at Lordco said it could be a fuel pump (not worried because I have a whole other 88 parts truck), sometimes they start acting up when they get old and used, plus it is right by the exhaust so that could explain why it won't start once it gets warm. Any other ideas?

If it were me, and I were using the '87 computer, I would have retained the EGR and knock sensor and swapped the upper intake manifolds. The blocks are the same, but the engine management is still expecting output from that sensor, which it's just going to run a little richer. It's possible to swap in the '92 computer, but I would really recommend that you map out the computer pins outs of the two years and resolve or supplement any differences that might arise.

As for your problem, there have been times where the engine coolant temperature sensor caused what you describe. It appears to be the same replacement part #, do you still have the '87 engine to pull the ECT to put into the '92? It is also testable if you find a resistence vs. temperature chart. I think there's one on http://www.fordfuelinjection.com .

The only way you'll be able to tell if the fuel pump is the problem is with a fuel pressure tester. Does it die randomly? Can you hear them hum twice for 2 sec when they key is turned to 'run'?

Yup, a year swap is only legal -- and is by far the most reliable -- when the whole emissions system goes with it OR the whole emissions system stays original (long block swap -- but in this case, the lower intakes are the same as well).

Run the engine self test. 87s don't have functional check engine lights (though it isn't too hard to wire one up, and you often have the bulb in the instrument cluster as well).
