Long story short, a bunch of trees got cut down on our property for a sewer line to come through. Now they're all laying there and we want to get some cut into boards, but don't know what is worth getting cut up and what is only good for firewood because other than cherry, we don't know what is what.

So is there any people that can ID trees that are on the ground that can come by an take a look for us? We're located in Butler, PA...

post up some pics, if you can some pics of the grain would help too.

Picture of the leaves should do it, grain like said above would help.

My computer is down, thus I'm not able to do pics right now. Leaves from said trees are long gone, these are just the long lengths of trunk laying on the ground. Our problem is the wide selection of trees on the property here...

We don't know how to ID the logs that we have, but we do know that so far on this property we have/had the following trees...

Swamp Oak
Pin Oak
Black Oak
White Oak
Red Oak
Ironwood
Shagbark Hickory
Cherry
Hawthorne
Maple

Plus I know that some of the trees that we have around here are none of those...

Other than the leaf pattern/structure, a lot of trees are very difficult to ID once they have been felled. Hell, a Linden looks like a Walnut from the outside.

I do hardwood flooring and can tell most of those apart. We usually use red & white oak, maple, walnut, and a couple other exotic ones.

I know you can tell if its Ironwood if its very dark, and very very dense. Maple is pretty light and has smoother grain than oak. Red and white oak can be hard to tell apart, even when milled.

Can you see the grain well enough to possibly match it to another pic on the internet?

And are there maybe any leaves left on the ground where the trees are laying?

In dendrology class we had to id trees from twigs and bark alone i is not really that hard to do. if there are any twigs you can search and find a dendrology guide that will help you id them. we had to id 120 trees to pass the test.

Working at my dads sawmill I learned how to ID wood a few different ways. Bark, endgrain of a log, grain of the board, and smell were what I used mostly there.

Sorry, this isn't helping you at all.

I've never used this, but if you can see the leaves (though they're probably gone by this time of year), this might help.

call the local tree company and ask them to come out for a estimate for tree removal and ask them as a side note whats what. it is possible to call a saw mill and see if the want to buy it and have them come out and let you know what you have. you mite even make a few bucks in the process. find people who would know and have them come out to do estimates. if 2 people agree you are more than likely getting the truth and can go from there with it.

local schools for forestry and similar vocations will have some nerd who is all about comming out just because he is a kiss ass and wants to look good. if none of those people exist just offer 50 bucks and someone will show.

We've tried calling all sorts of people to come out and look. Several have promised to show and never did, then they refused to return calls.:dntknw:

Thus why I asked on here, hoping that someone like Milje or Smokey would be able to come by and give us an idea of what's here.

yeah I'm only about 2 hours away from yeah scan some of the twigs with buds and I may be able to help.

I'll see what I can do, it would be easier if my computer hadn't picked this time to die...:black_eye:
