Ok so i was at work and my coworker and i went to check out a new orv park about 3 miles awqay that will open on thursday. Long in short i drove throught a puddle and it dropped of real deep, about mid door, sucking up water into the intake. It was in the wated about 30 min before we could get towed out. It doesnt want to crank now. All it does is make a click like the battery is dead, which the volt meter is also indicating. I presume the battery cross drained while sittin in the water. What do i have to do or look out for before i try to jump start it so i dont mess the engine up if it sucked up a bit of water into it?? Please help as right now im stuck at work!

Pull the spark plugs out. The starter could be wet so try to get that dry a bit, hot air, fan, set it in the sun, etc.

Get it to crank over and blow the water out of the cylinders. Which should probably be done asap. Do not try cranking it with water in the cylinders with the spark plugs in it.

And before you drive anywhere on it check your fluids. ALL OF THEM. Especially -Engine, Front axle, tranny, and t-case.

thanks for the info, i already pulled the plugs and cranked it. Shot a bit of water out of both banks. It cranked and sounded normal while doing so also. So now I'm just letting the plugs dry out, sitting in the sun, then ill put them back in and try it. I'm guessing and oil change is in order now too, along with checkin all the other fluids.

Coach Klein (Henry Winkler / The Fonz) from Waterboy couldn't have said it better.

"Waaater sucks, it really, really sucks, waaater sucks!"

You can shoot the plugs with starting fluid- it'll clean them and it evaporates really quickly.

got it started, kicked a lot of water out of the exhaust, bought a new airfilter and went right to jiffy lube and got the diff's, tranny and t-case serviced. Good thing too, the tranny and t-case were water free, which i expected but fluid was baaaad, diff's on the other hand were full of water. So I'm going to extend the vent tubes and have them come out higher on the vehicle to prevent that.

Sweeeet. You avoided disaster by using your brain- and not rushing into cranking it. Always remove the plugs when you suspect water could be in there, hydrolocking is a fast way to destroy an engine. Water in the other components takes longer, but the same results.

When I hydrolocked my 2.9 it had the same initial symptoms, but even after removing the plugs it wouldn't turn...

I ran one of the crank counterweights into the wrist pin boss on the underside
of the #3 piston. That was of course the piston that lived on the end of the bent connecting rod.

Damn you're hard on stuff... hee hee... was the crank/block rebuildable?

Damn you're hard on stuff... hee hee... was the crank/block rebuildable?

Didn't even try, I pulled out my keepsake (the bent rod and mashed piston)
and tossed the rest.

You've gotta understand, I consider most engines "disposable commodity"
I can get engine another cheaper than I can buy gaskets for rebuilding one
let alone any mahine shop work.

I understand completely. Its cheaper to replace the engine than replace the head gaskets in many cases, especially if there's a cracked head...

And the "keepsake?" I call 'em shop trophies and I've got lots of them!

My latest is the front bearing retainer from my 13-54 T-case.

It's living proof that 13-54's aren't "bullet proof"

The front bearing bore lost the Rim above the snap ring groove
which allowed the bearing (and the ring of aluminum) to rotate freely

AND allow the planetary to "walk" forward and back...
enough that the inner hub was griding against the low
range engagement dog teeth...

All kinds of interesting metal bits got marked.

You might wanna consider doing something like I did with my intake, after I lost my engine that way.
