My credo
When life gives ya lemons, ya blow them lemons to bits wit ya laser cannons!
On my new (old) 86 2.9 bronco 2 how is the distributor tightened down? It's been a while since I worked with dizzys so a refresher might help.

At the base is a clamp and bolt.

13mm or 1/2 inch bolt holding the clamp.

Distributor seems tight, but I think the timing is off. It runs but won't stay running.

Check the firing order and the wires...redo them if not in proper order...don't know it off hand but it should be on the truck somewhere...pretty sure it's in the tech articles in the library.

EDIT: Yes, the fring order (that's fries and rings) is 1-4-2-5-3-6 and you can find quite a bit of information on the engine at the following link:

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_9_Page.shtml

The firing order can be confusing...the plugs start at 1 on the left (standing facing the front of the truck)...

</td> </tr> </tbody></table>
