First off, I think this is an awesome site. I have been looking through this site for a while now and just recently decided to join. I have a problem that seems to perplex even the parts guys at dealers. I bought a 1994 Mazda B4000 a couple months ago. The truck came without a transmission. I recently purchased the transmission (m5r1) from smartpartsauto.com (I recommend highly). Anyways I now need the bolts to install the transmission and the transfer case. I have both parts but none of the bolts. I talked to NAPA and they said if I can come up with the sizes of bolts they can order them. I talked to the ford dealer parts counter and they said they cant help because it is a mazda I talked to the mazda parts guy and he gave me the part numbers but said they are no longer made. I would like to get new bolts but I am thinking the only way I can fix this is to head to the junk yards. Help me!!!

A junkyard or possibly a large transmission shop is probably your best bet. Some of the engine-to trans bolts are miserable to reach.

If you are back in the Ford dealership, put on a false mustache and tell them you have a 1994 Ranger 4x4 with the 5 spd - it is the same trans!

Or try e-bay

Good luck!

I think I may have found the correct one. One of them. I was over at the guy who i bought the truck from's house and of course he still has the old bell housing in pieces on his workbench. I started browsing the infinite number of parts and saw one bolt that caught my eye. I brought it home and tried it in the threads and it was the right size. seems to be the right length as well. I will be going to napa and asking if they can get more of them and then I will Post what size it is. thanks guys.

can any or most of the bolts be replaced with studs and nuts? the scenario, um recurring nightmare, i have running through my mind is laying under the truck with oily fingertips trying to start a bolt against the torsional friction caused by less than perfectly aligned holes. a couple nuts on threads that are already exposed (through the bell housing holes) would be easier to secure the transmission to the engine block so i, i mean my friend, can crawl out from under the truck(for the millionth time) to track down the rags/tools/parts i knew, i mean my friend knew, would be needed.

or would there be too many other issues raised(i.e. no clearance to slide transmission back to clear studs)?

I have tried trans studs instead and had mixed success. I have two pieces of all-thread that I put in the dowel holes to help line up the trans. It works well on my BII, but makes a horrible mess of things on my truck because of the angle the trans has to go in at.

I also imagine that nuts would not get the needed thread depth to hold properly.

Old trick for mounting trans in general (haven't made/tried a set for the ranger yet - its on a long 'do someday' list) is to chop heads off a couple spare transmission bolts, cut/grind slots in them and use them as mounting studs/dowels to start things out. Once you have the trans on, aligned and slid up into place, you start a couple of the 'real' bolts in other holes, then remove your studs with a flat screwdriver before continuing with the rest of the bolts

I had very little trouble putting the trans back in the Rat. I used a milk crate and a bunch of short 2x and 4x wooden blocks. I just rocked the trans back and forth adding a 2x first in front , then in back. When it got close I added a 3/4 board. I got it close and wiggled it right in. I dont think I used any punches as pins to line up the holes. It was slow, but easy work, with a lot less thrashing then in days gone by.

Once you get the bolts, I just remove my trans mount n skid plate, let the engine hang down in the rear, get on my back hug the Mazda trans and push it up into place. once there I will install the two side center bolts snug and then jack up the tail end of the trans and reinstall x member. Install other bolts.
