Figured I’d post on here to see if maybe anyone had any insight, I bought this 87 Ford Ranger a few months back with the 2.3 A4LD combo, prior to me purchasing it the guy had the transmission rebuilt by a reputable trans shop, then installed it himself, and had no gears, so he gave up on it. I finally got around to yanking the trans out, and I’m not seeing any signs of damage, anything to look for in particular? Don’t know if it’s of relevance, but the 2.3 is also out of a Pinto I believe, thanks in advance! Also when i tried to take the inner shaft out, it wouldn’t budge, maybe it’s in wrong?

What's the pump gear look like?

Those are 3 seats....sounds like he crushed it....unless the pump gear was backwards.

I’ve attached more photos, unless you mean pump gear as in disassembling the bellhousing? Would you be able to tell if it was backwards if i took it apart?

You may be able to see past the seal...or you may have to pop it out and replace the seal to see if the gear is broke.

Hard to see if the TQ converter is jacked up....

That is what the pump gear looks like....you can see how the converter hub drives it.

The small inner shaft is the direct shaft. Sometimes the stack up is wrong and the hub is too far forward or the splines are longer and the shaft can be backwards.. janking up the converter and the direct clutch hub causing the shaft to get stuck.... If that's the case ... Not good.

Was the filter on right ? The proper amount of fluid? Was the rooster comb and manual valve right?

Could just be a loose filter or valve body

Can't see it from here

So we got the case off, pan looks brand new inside, fluid looks great, took the front pump off, and i believe you were right, the builder installed we think the gear in backwards, because how we tested it the converter could never sit in the gear, we ordered a new gear cause this one is a bit messed up and i don’t want to take any chances. https://transpartswarehouse.com/56530-ford-c-3-a4ld-4r44e-4r55e-pump-gears-1974-94.html Will this front pump gear work? Also in the 3rd photo of the shaft, where can i get another one of those hard o rings? The one of i have is sliced and also is nicked. Thanks in advance!

There are one piece seals that have a tool...but on a4ld I have used scarf cuts as well.

The gear looks right...but the TQ converter was not seated correctly at one point.

Any soft kit should have the seal..
