Need a Tranny....which ones swap? 97 Ranger 4.0L 2wd

Just picked up another Ranger for $300.....guy got stuck in it and his friend kept putting it in reverse and back to drive to rock it out....screwed up the tranny...no reverse and possibly stuck in 2nd.

I plan on fixing it to sell it so I want to go cheap and easy. What are my options with the auto tranny? Will one from a 98 explorer 4x4 fit?

Definately need a sticky thread about tranny swaps/compatabily on here....Im not a new guy here.....been around for 2 years just usually figure out problems on my own by searching haha.

will a 99 explorer 2wd tranny work? sounds good.....found one for $200

ok so......i think both transmissions are 5r55e......if they are is there any thing that will be different?

It'll be a 5R55E.

But you need a 2wd tranny.

Anything from 95-2001 2wd Ranger or Explorer with a 4.0 should work.

I was a little disappointed that your's was 2wd. I'm looking at a parts truck next weekend with a newly rebuilt tranny. It's a 96' 4X4 though.

Not sure if tail housings can be easily swapped or if the output shafts are the same.....
