Does anyone know where I can locate a new 4.0 bellhousing block plate and a manual floor shifter? I am about to do a swap from the A4LD to an M5R1 and these are the only parts I am having issues finding. I am using all 4.0 parts from a '94 Explorer (for consistancy), plus there will be a 4.0 swap in the future. Also, all of the remanned trannies I have found do not seem to have the shifter stub sticking out of the top plate that I see on the used trannies. When I find a shifter, will this just drop in or is there more that I am missing? And lastly, I know I have to change the ECM as well. Do I need to stay with an '88 or is the a couple of years that will work as long as it's from the same motor (obviously). Thanks for the help, MJ

I would say j/y would be your best bet, or post an ad in the WTB forum.

You can always modify your a/t blockplate to fit the starter. As for the shifter, on the M5OD there were two different length stub levers depending on the shift tower height. You can always change the shifter housing/top cover to mate with a specific shifter assembly. (i'm not sure what years the housings changed, '96 maybe?) The shifter itself does not have to come from a 4.0 truck, any M5OD behind any engine (2wd or 4wd) will work, although, if you are using a manual t/case, you may have a hard time finding the entire boot/bezel assembly. (they're somewhat rare)

For the computer, i'm pretty sure any 2.9 STD, non egr computer will work (88-92, as long as it is not the elusive MAF system)

If i'm wrong or missed anything, i'm sure someone else will chime in.......

Thanks. I was hoping to try to stay with new/remanned parts this time around. But I do suppose that these parts wouldn't matter either way in that respect.
Any way to tell which stub to use? The tranny I am getting is for a '88-'04, so I don't know for sure which top cover it will have.
I have the electronic T-Case. That is a whole nother bucket of bait. But I atleast don't have to worry about the double stick boot and what not.
Thanks again, MJ

If the reman tranny does not come with the shifter stub, you'll have to wait untill you actually have it in order to determine which stub/shifter to get. Once you have the tranny, just post a pic of the top cover and someone here can tell which style it is.

FWIW, i'm surprised they wouldn't supply the tranny WITH the stub shaft. Make sure you also buy the shifter bushing kit. (I doubt they'll include them)

Sounds like a plan. That is part of the problem with the T-Case. I'm not home so I don't know what it looks like just like the tranny. The truck has basicly been a family pass-around (on my wifes side), so I got it for free and plan to give it a second coming. I already planned on the shifter bushing and the like. Just like replacing the rear main on the motor, it just makes sense. I figure posting pics is about the best option I have beyond buying one and hoping it fits.
