Someone tried to tell me recently that keeping the leaf springs on the rear axle closer together is better. Like if they were 36" center to center or less (38.5 c to c stock?) that it provides better off-road ability. They really couldn't give me an answer as to why though. Is there any truth in this or was someone just talking out their ass?

The closer to center the springs the more leverage the axle puts on them and can get more flex. But because of the extra leverage it reduces stability as they are moved in.

^^^ I second that.

Better way to gain flex is to use softer springs (maybe even outboard them at the same time if you're doing any major revamping of the rear suspension).
