I think this sensor is the oil level sensor (for the dummy light), but I am not having much luck finding a part listing for it - maybe another name?

1993 Ranger, 4.0L. The sensor is in the side of the oil pan, driver side of the engine.

Yes, that is a low oil level sensor, it will supply a ground to the "check oil" light on the dash, if oil is low.
They were on some rangers from 1992 and up, most explorers had them I think

They are a 100% leak point at some time in their life.

great, thanks.

New engine should arrive on Tuesday. Thinking I really would rather plug the hole than replace the sensor. Does anyone know if can I just wrap up the wire or do I need to do something special to keep the dummy light from coming on? Not the best at electrical, but it seems that if it provides a ground when low I should be able to just remove it.

Yes, you should be able to wrap it and prevent the light from coming on. Why would you not just replace it though?

Leaving it out means one less thing to worry about later. A new part is ~$70, the dipstick seems to work good enough, and if the engine gets so low on oil that the light turns on then I think the truck would have bigger problems.

While small, i view the ability to delete from the engine things that provide little value as a victory. Far more interested in real-time oil pressure than a notice of 1.5 qt of oil low.
