I need to replace something with the hydraulics in my Manual M50dr1 (I think thats how you spell it), the clutch grabs just fine, but I have bad trouble getting it to engage and disengage. Do i want to replace both the clutch Master cylinder and the Slave cylinder or one or the other? :icon_confused: I dont feel like buying a part thats not needed.

more details.

how does the pedal feel? does it go straight to the floor and not return? or does it act normal but the clutch doesn't disengage?

Hows the fluid level look? Are you loosing fluid?

The pedal is normal but hard to push down and the action on the clutch is a half inch from the floor, and doesnt disengage and i usually have to double clutch. I also have bled the clutch reallllyyy well 3 times and it hasnt gotten better. There is a coating of some fluid on the outside of the trans and i slowly lose fluid in the resevior and have to fill it up almost on a daily basis. The pedal also has a cracking sound when i push it down, not sure if that related or not...Thanks for the help guys.

make sure the pedal assembly is not falling apart, then locate your leak.

its probably the slave cylinder, but the master cylinder can leak fluid also.

the master will leak fluid into the cab of the truck or down the firewall, it doesn't sound like you have an internally leaking master.

a slave will leak between the engine and transmission, which sounds like your case

I went outside today and there was a large puddle of fluid a foot in diameter under the trans, was still clear, so im sure it was clutch fluid because i have been filling it up all week. I will order the parts, has anyone ever changed out a slave cylinder from a 91 ranger? Can a backyard mechanic with some good tools do it?

yes easily. its not hard if you've replaced a clutch before

I have never done a clutch before, is a clutch just a align and bolt in kind of deal? I know the slave just has a clutch line to it, I also dont think i can take off my y pipe unless i decided to cut it...I heard that its nearly impossible to drop the trans without the y pipe removed, is that true?

You might consider just getting a clutch kit and douing the clutch while you have it apart. Murphys law says the clutch will fail shortly after you get it back together. The kits include the clutch, pressure plate,TO bearing, and slave and I recommend putting a new flywheel and pilot bearing also they are not that expensive and a new master will give you a complete new clutch you can depend on. The best way to bleed the master is out of the truck anyway. Any questions or problems just ask

what clutch kit would you recommend? and how hard is the install?
Thanks for any advice in advance.

Bump, Anybody have any advice about installing a new clutch, on scale of 1-10 on difficulty, or the basics of how it goes?

If you can pull a transmission by yourself, then the clutch change will be the easy part.

anyone else have advice on a clutch change from their own personal experiences? i really want to have some basis of knowledge before i jump into this major project and realize im screwed ha...thanks guys.

Its not really that hard to change a clutch as long as you get the clutch kit that has the alignment tool included. The hardest part will be removing the transmission, pulling it apart from the motor, and then sliding the transmission back on to the two guide pins in the motor. The clutch removal is easy and complicated at the same time, but if you have all the right tools it will be easier. It's always good to have a buddy help you with it. If you run into a problem we are here to answer any questions.

Oh, by the way. DO NOT buy the kit from Autozone. They are junk! You will be changing the clutch again in a year or so. Sure it's lifetime waranty but then you have to go through the headache of pulling the clutch again. Been there.:pissedoff:
