recently my 5 speed transmison has been making funny noises and im not sure if my clutch is worn out or not.. problem happens when first taking off from a start, as soon as you let the clutch out to move, it makes a growling kind of noise, sounds like ER-ER-ER-ER-ER untill its fully released and the vehicle is moving. sounds fine in neutral/clutch fully in/ shifting gears. its not slipping for sure, im thinking the plate is missing a chunk out of it.. should i freak out or not? im not experienced with clutches so i need your guys for advice.

Been a long time , but IIRC, the throwout bearing is getting noisy. It is a normal wear item on a clutch set up.

^yep, TO bearing. Might as well pull the tranny and change it and the clutch slave, before it blows up and takes out our clutch as well.

Eh, run 'er till she blows and replace the whole set.

Unless the clutch is less than 3 years old I won't pull my own transmission and not replace it anyway.

oddly enough today its been realy quiet and seems to ok.. will take it out for a test drive around the block to see what happens..

Ok, so I have to say it. This thread is titled "My tranny is groweling at me". It caught my attention. That could be taken in a whole different way. Which is what I thought. Ya know, tranny, transvestite. Sorry just had to. Made me laugh even though I knew what you were referring to. :icon_rofl:

Something else I just thought of...

A few years ago I thought my FM145 was about to blow up so I bought up all the parts for the 4.0 clutch and M5OD swap, took the whole thing apart, and found the pilot bearing had disintegrated.

It may be something as innocuous as that if it has stopped now.

so if it stays stoped and clutch works like normal im good? phew! still trying to get 3 good steel rims after the incident were i flew over a drainage ditch so the last thing id want is a bad clutch. btw,the jump wasn't on purpose..

and vanessa, you have a dirty mind :)

Nothing your describing sounds "major" unless a clutch change is major to you. If it makes no strange noises when in neutral engine running it should be good to go.

A clutch change is really not that hard to do, and if you have a 2WD it's cake.

yep, in neutral/fully engaged/fully disengaged, its quiet as a mouse, only makes a noise when releasing the clutch to take off.

Oops... I meant to say neutral, engine running, clutch pedal fully released.

But you knew that.:icon_thumby:

all good then, atleast for a while?
