I had a problem last night that when my starter got submerged for a second it didn't want to work right. The motor turned fine but didn't want to engage the flywheel. So i did the old "tap the starter with a hammer" trick and it worked fine. So i know its not a bad spot on the fly wheel.

So is there anything I can do to make the starter more water resistant?

Not really. I guess you could take the all apart and use grease, RTV and o-rings to seal it. But you also seal in the heat thus shorting it's life span. It sounds like the solenoid is what was giving you trouble.

I recommend leaving it be, 12v systems are almost immune to water.
