I have an 86 Ford Ranger xlt. it has a 4 inch lift 31in LT on it, Pro Comp suspension, Roll bar, 4:10 gear ratio, K&N air filter, 2.9l V6, and a couple other features.

I plan on turnin this bad boy into a crawler. some additions i will make to the truck
- Swap a 302 into the truck supercharge it and bore it out.
- Hoping to put a dana in the front im not sure about rear yet
- exo-skeleton
- suspension etc.

I plan on posting some pictures if you guys are interested, any tips or recommendations are always welcome

What tire size you thinking of running? and what are you doing first? This gonna be a daily driver? Is this your only car?

Why do you need so much power in a crawler. To break more parts or to cause control issues?

He's right. Either way you'll be spiinning tires or burning clutches. Before doing a full engine swap regear to the largest size, be it 4.88 or5.13, lock it and get 35's. Work on articulation over power. My buddys got a 2.5l with 4.88s and 35s and he can crawl up alot of shot and if he can't then the tires will spin.

im not exactly sure What axels i have on there noW. i Will find out. i Was planning on going With 35's. and it Will not be my daily driver When i start the project. the reasoning for the 302 supercharged is because i can pick one up for free and didnt see a need in buying another motor When i can just throW that one in. as far as What i am going to do first, i Was think the axels and dual t cases first then going to suspension

What axles are in the 86 3.0 xlt's Dana 35 front and 8.8 rear or 7.5?

1. its a 2.9L
2. no d35 in 86, it's a d28
3. no 8.8 in 86, it's a 7.5

if you have all these plans- i'd say do the motor first so you can build the rest of it around all that power. (IMO- this means d60's, a good 5 speed, and dual t/cases- even tho dual t/cases may not be needed for all that power)

You already have a "Dana" in that truck it's a Dana 28. With a super charged 302 some Dana 60s from a full size bronco would be nice.

If you're doing all this work you might as well make it a buggy and tow the thing. You could run 40's easily with dana 60's and I would definably use the Dual transfer cases if youre not going to re gear those new axles. Youre going to want to "crawl" not rape the rocks... speed is sweet for racers but these sick crawlers articulate and crawl up shit. You should dove tail and bob the bed and when you do the SAS move it up a few inches, if you can.... youre approach and departure angle would be awesome.

I suggest you learn what you are doing before you do it. You're going to go with different axles and then upgrade the suspension later? If you are doing a SAS, it's all done at the same time, as there is no other way to physically do it. I can't even wrap my head around your logic. You can get a suercharged 5.0 for free? That won't just bolt right in, it sounds like it's WAY out of your range of capability at this point. I'm not trying to insult you, but we do get a lot of kids like you on here with big dreams that never pan out because you simply do not know what you are doing. If you did, you wouldn't be asking questions like these. You also would know what axles you had, that is such basic, basic stuff. Lemme guess, you're 16, and this is your first truck, and you bought it like it is? You're best off fixing it up the way it is as I'm sure there's some worn out parts on it if you bought it lifted and are not even sure what it is for a truck.
