I was totally embarassed today! I went back through the trails today where my son was cutting wood with some buds. His friend had a s-10 4x4 with bfg a/ts. we were coming back up a snow covered hill and he was in the lead, I watched as he climbed the hill at a steady pace. never spun a tire. My turn. six tries later I finally made it up the hill. I followed the same line as he did, same speed. we later drove across open field side by side in about 7 inches of snow just to compare. He difinitely had much better traction, by far. he had no lift, 235 tires. Im running 31x10.50s . I have to tell you the bfgs made a believer out of me. Its hard to believe a tire can perform that much better.

if you would have went first it may have went the other way...what were the loads?

i love my pro comp at's...not any different them the bfg's save they dont wop out belts so far..

then again its apples oranges too

he said he thought it was because his truck weighed like 4200lbs compared to my short box ranger. he said his truck was terrible in sand and mud where mine rocks in mud. Does anyone carry weight for traction in snow?

Hmmm...I'm loving my LT265/75R16 procomp at's on my 05 sport trac. Never had a problem with them in the snow (they are also winter rated by the RAC (rubber association of Canada))

well when i said apples oranges i was talking trucks and tire sizes. if you had 31 1050 bfgs you would have likely had the same result. if you had the smaller tires in this particular case i would wager a better result.

almost sounds like your 4x4 isnt working though

oh i forgot..the bfg pattern does do better in the snow. and i noted the comp did better in the sand mud and rain...but the difference in snow is not enough to affect my personal rig..i run a 305 16 on the road...

I just converted my autos to manual locks. they said when I came up the hill that they could see it start losing traction right away. I noticed on the way down i was sliding quite a bit more than him too. could weight account for that? As far as weight goes I dont see why more weight would be a benifit except for traction in snow on hard frozen ground. I know my tires were just spinning not digging. my pro comps have a real close pattern. by the way its like 10 degrees out, would a softer tire be better in cold temps?

snow/ice tires are made out of a softer compound so they grip better in colder temperatures. That's why they get all greasy and handle like ass in warmer weather.

your not going to believe this. the same guy got stuck in the mud out by the same trail. my son called and said Dad can you come out and pull us out? I was alittle worried about that hill but said "Ill be there in 45 min." I ended up going down the same trail this guys stuck on and pulling him out, then driving up the same hill that I tried six times before ,and never spun a tire. only difference, this time I had 400 pounds of weight in the back. I was tempted to give it the gas going up but kept it slow and steady and never spun a tire. I wonder if I didnt give it too much gas before. he had auto I have 5spd. Either way Im feeling better. I knew this truck had to do better than that. Im chaulking it up to driver error.

i run 33s pro comp/ a/ts an i LOVE them.. awesome tire in snow compared to my old 31 mud tires their quiet, get good traction and didnt break the bank to bad.. my buddy used to swear by mud tires one for the looks an performance of them off road.. well their killing his pocket an are loud as hell on the rd..so guess what hes buying a set of pro comp a/ts in 33s in a few weeks.

well the only reason i have procomps is because they are manufactured by cooper. otherwise i would have some sort of coopers for the street...been looking at the m16 though. just cant see ss making a round balancable tire though:icon_rofl:...

i like coopers for tires the see street use....swampers for off road.

i realize you also asked if at was better then mt in snow. on the road i always had better performance with at or dedicated snow tires....mt's sucked

BUT....off road mt's are great. its all in what you do the most as to what you need for general use.

most comments i get on the road is that my tires are too small..and they are to a point....but they are still 33's.
