this is a long and ongoing problem after. i bought the truck 1 1/2 years ago when i replaced the battery about a year ago(last time it was replaced was May of 99 25550miles had somewhere around 74000 last year that little energizer bunny really does last)
but anyways back to the problem the display at a regular interval of about 20secs will get alot brighter for 20 secs and then back to normal i can deal with it during the day but long drives at night are killer.

i downloaded the manual and cant find anything about it

Do you have your Illumination wire connected? Seems to me like an internal problem, the contrast/display may be failing.

disconnect the illuminatio wire from the back all that controls is when your light go on the stereo dims if its hooked up, may just be that.

Common problem for the "EL" display to fail.....
I have the same head unit and it wont display at all.
My attempts to contact pioneer have left me to believe
that it's a lost cause.
I was quoted 1/3 of the cost of the head unit for a
repair cost quote.....:icon_confused:
I will cut my losses and buy new.......
good luck

alright i m not sure what im doing with this not sure what wires go to what

P.S. how do i pull the head unit out?

If it was installed with a cage(which it should) you should have keys that slide down the sides and lock in to pull it out.

You should be able to get them cheap or free from a car audio place. They're pretty much just sheet metal with hooks on the end.

every pioneer ive owned with the organic el display did that, (deh6600,7600,80) ive heard theres a setting to disable it but it never bothered me. but no theres nothing wrong with your head unit

Not sure if you resolved this yet or not, but I have a pioneer deck as well. When it is first hooked up, or in your case, when you put a new battery in and it resets to factory defaults, it has a demo mode and what they call a 'reverse mode.' The reverse mode is what you are looking for. Basically, the black space on the LCD turns to the green and the green turns to the black, and it does it every 15-20 seconds. Look at the link someone else posted for the manual and check the index for 'reverse mode.' On mine, it was a simple setting change in the menu to shut it off.
