my old'ish laptop battery life sucks

There is a place here in town called Batteries Plus that can get any battery you want (at least I haven't stumped them yet), in high capacity as well. They also have any charger you want too. Years ago, they could rebuild batteries, but I don't know if they still do that. I didn't realize they had gotten so big until I checked out their site. Here's a link to it:

Also, as far as the capacity of memory, let me show you how I figure out capacities. Go to www.memory.com and enter all of your info. It will tell you what it came with, type/compatibility info, how many slots, and capacity. From there I usually shop around, they are usually high in price. Great tool though!

try for a Mercury Battery Cell (not joking), they are not legal, but are extremely long lasting and safe (until somee idiot opens it and says they wanna sew the company for it being dangrous, just dont open the battery and your fine), and on top of that, the output is the same till it dies, unlike Lithium or Alkline, where as the energy depleads, so does the amount being release.

Or just go for a Lithium batteyr extension, google your laptop and look for companies that made them. Match the input and output to your laptop though.

Good luck finding one to fit.

Mercury is also poisonous. If you were to drop the battery and it crack, you would have to have a hazmat team clean it up.

:icon_confused:I have been working with batteries and electronics that have mercury batteries for over 4 years now and have never ever had a battery crack from being dropped. You can clean up Mercury using a pair of gloves, bleach, paper towels, a shovel, and towel you don't want or need.

You dig a deep hole in an area you wont walk over for a few days, and about 3 feet deep, you put 2 pair of rubber gloves on, and use the towel to soak it up (place it face down on top of the mercury, and let it soak it up), following that, put a pair of gardening gloves on over the top of the 2 pairs of rubber gloves, and slowly walk the towel to the hole you dug, and place it inside the hole, following this, remove all the gloves and either burn them or put them in the hole. Go inside, anothe 2 pairs of rubber gloves, and use the bleach and paper towels to carefully clean the floor or wherever (if its inside). Then flush the evidence, wash hands thoroughly, and no poisoning happens to you.:icon_rofl:

NOTE: DO NOT PLACE WITH MERCURY!!!!

And you get caught doing that and you will more than likely pay a HUGE fine and possibly spend some time in jail.

ok, my system info says that the manufacturer is HP, model Presario R4000

can't find it anywhere on the memory configuration at www.memory.com

edit:
nvm, i found it after searching

Standard Memory: 256MB or 512MB removable
Maximum Memory: 2GB
Expansion Slots/Banks: 2 slots

so i've found online that there is an easy to get to memory slot through the bottom of the laptop... and another underneath my keyboard which is a little bit harder to get to.

could i throw in 1GB sticks in each of them? would that work? kinda wish i could do more... could always use more memory.

Yes, putting 1GB sticks in each slot will give you 2GB of total RAM (memory).

Since you are running XP, unless you are running major programs like Photoshop or AutoCAD, you shouldn't need anymore RAM than 2GB.

and well, long story short my parents were going to switch me to AT&T service and get me an iphone for graduation, because my college didnt have verizon service, but they are now putting in a verizon tower close enough so they will have service, so no more iphone (bittersweet i guess lol).

so i am possibly going to be getting a new laptop.

so, i'll be holding off on battery/ram for a while until we figure out what i'm getting for grad present.

STOP!!!!!!!!

don't buy a new battery till you have watched this!!!!

that'd be great if i had soldering supplies... but i don't. so it's like i have to go to the trouble of possibly blowing up my house, buying soldering supplies, making time to do all of this, or i can just make a few clicks, and buy it. sure it's what the manufacturer's want, they want people like me who don't have the know how and/or time to do the cheaper just as fine fixes (if that would indeed work), but that's what i have, and that's what i'd do if i wasn't getting a new laptop.

thanks for the post though, it might help someone else out.

no worries... fwiw gas powered soldering irons are available at home depot for about $30 and a cheap electric one can probably be picked up for about $15
