My New House & Workshop

If only I still had my cassette tapes

I would love to have an old stereo setup, but not in the shop. I haven't listened to FM in years. I think I need a Bluetooth speaker.

I use a old radio a little newer than the one you posted plugged into a free 19" tv hooked up to a $30 Roku and stream youtube or iheart radio.

Radio has a bunch of speakers I have sprinkled around the garage.

Scooter has this JBL boom box thing at work. Its seriously loud and has great sound quality. It's a little big if you were gonna lug it around a lot. But it's loud enough to drown out 3 CNC machines all cutting at once.

For the last 5 years in my shop all I've used is the stilly little Bauer radio going to my phone on bluetooth... how one 3" speaker does so much I have no idea but a battery lasts like a week, no real complaints so I haven't changed it... I do have a car stereo that's extra at this point and do have a plan to use it and a car battery with float charger to make a 12V power supply for various uses and stereo...

Hey Jim,
I love good audio, I am also in the cabling business (Data, Cat 5, fiber, etc.) I have been using Sonos audio equipment last few years. Picture attached is a 5 model. It’s about the size of 2 loaves of bread. You can use smaller ones scattered room to room as needed. It is wireless-you will need a 110 outlet for each speaker. There is an app you load and get what streaming source you like-Pandora, Spotify, etc. it is really a great option as you can play a particular artist, or even a station with that particular artists name., Like say Elvis Radio. It will learn what you like. The quality is very good, and you can move the speakers around since it’s wireless. Lots of flexibility. Just make sure your Wi-Fi is up to snuff, Ubiquiti makes a long range wireless device that looks like a flying saucer from the fifties movies. It gives great coverage for your music and your regular Wi-Fi use. Let me know if you need help. Have a good one.

I don’t think you can get that at Goodwill.

Back in the 70's we had a stereo with a turn table and an 8-track player in the living room. We had a finished rec room in the basement and a covered patio on the back of the house. There were speakers in the basement ceiling and a pair of drive-in move speakers mounted out on the patio. My dad installed a selector knob behind the stereo that you could turn to send music to the basement or the patio. It was kind of neat back then. Hard to believe that today I can carry that stereo and all of those albums and 8-tracks in my pocket and send it to an amplified speaker without using any wires. Even crazier that I wish I could go back to that time.

I could drop a schematic of the Panasonic four channel. I have in my living room right now, cabled into my cassette player at a track. It probably wouldn’t take much to put in the flip switch to take it out to my deck.

You could put it in your living room, and then pipe it out to your shop…

Unfortunately, I’m not joking this time…

Really it's pretty simple these days. I have a 8 year old Yamaha 5.1 receiver in my living room i pulled out of a bus cause the volume knob was acting funny. It has a A/B speaker switch right on the face. I have in-ceiling speakers installed and a sub in the corner. I have 2 small outdoor speakers under my deck on the back. I can run channel A or B solo or both with that switch. If you have access to run speaker wires it's pretty simple to have multiple rooms. They also offer some wifi room speakers that connect. Mine is Bluetooth as well so we can stream anything from our phones or devices. We normally run Pandora through the smart TV.

Here's what I'm using...I spared no expense
