I went out to California with my buddy to pickup a prerunner explorer that he had just bought. While we were out there I came across a 96 Ranger 4x4 4.0 5spd that was for sale for $1200. I had been looking for a ext cab 4x4 4.0 manual for a long time but all the ones around here were over priced. The truck had been in a front end accident so I had the frame checked and it was straight but it had a new core support replaced by the owner. She told me that the previous owner had the motor and tranny rebuilt and had 55k miles on it but she had no proof. Well I ended up talking her down to $900 and then started my 1700 mile trip back to Texas and truck made it all the way back with no problems while averaging 22mpg the whole way. Here is how the truck looked when I picked it up
Once I got it home I picked up a hood, a header panel with grille and lights, 4" Glassworks fiberglass fenders. This is when I was mocking up everything so nothing is straight.
One day me and a body went out wheeling and I started to loose traction so I kicked it in to 4wd and thats when I found out the rear end gears didnt match the front ones. The previous owner had put a new rear end in the truck and didnt take the time to match the gears to the front ones. Come to find out the rear end they put in had 3.23 gears and the front had 3.73 gears. So after finding that out I picked up a rear end out of a 2003 edge that had 4.10 gears and put it in the truck and pulled the front drive shaft. Here is how the truck sits now with the front end straight, 16" mickey thompson classic locks, and 33" BFG all terrians.
Future plans are ext dana 35 or dana 44 4x4 beams, coilovers, 4 link rear, 9" rear end, and full cage. Let me know what you guys think so far
