So I just bought my first ranger last week, 99 4wd 4.0 5speed supercab. As I'm going through all the usual things that one goes through when they buy a used rig I discover that the rear R&P has a 10 41 stamp on it. Per my experience with Dana axles this tells me that the gears are 4.10 and not 4.56 per the tech library. So now there's a few things I'm considering.
1. The PO swapped out the rear axle.
2. The PO regeared the axle.
3. Ford doesn't use similar gear stamping designation as Spicer so I should just forget about how sick I am and bust out the floorjack & jackstands and do a tooth count on the r&p.
Why is this a concern to me? Because I'm suspicious by nature and if the front is geared 4.56 the drivetrain is going to bind. I could pull the front diff pan and check the gear stamping but I'd rather leave it alone if I could satisfy my concern about the rear.
So my question is how does Ford stamp their R&P to designate the ratio?
Cheers,
Joe
