Solid Axle Swap
Truck of Month
Thought some people would be interested in knowing the results of the lift in the rear of my '87 Bronco II.
I had a complete Skyjacker 6" lift for the front, which included extended radius arms. I also have a set of 4" Skyjacker leaf springs that I had considered using with 2" blocks, but they seem to flex really well in my Ranger so I decided to leave them in that. So I needed to put something in the rear of my B2 so it would sit level.
I used the following parts:
- Belltech 6400 shackle kit - $42 shipped from Amazon.com
- 3" lift blocks and u-bolts from Autozone - $25
- Leaf springs from a '97 Explorer (4.0, 4 door, 4 leaf pack) - worth around $50 total from a junkyard. Traded for mine so they were "free."
After removing the stock leaf springs and installing all of the above, my B2 is sitting very level. On 205/70/15 tires, the rear measures 36" from the ground to the top of the wheel arch in the rear, and 37" in the front. I don't have an engine in it right now so I anticipate it will sit at least an inch lower once I put a 2.9 back in.
Before: (engine still in, stock rear springs/shackles, 3" blocks)
After: (No engine, Belltechs, Explorer springs, same 3" blocks - this pic is a little deceptive because of the angle)
