My 8.8 Re-Gearing Endeavor.

a small straight edge off the carrier bearing cap mount surface and a caliper should be able to tell you the depth.

yes its a good place to start by using the depth marked on the new pinion head,i agree its too deep now

I tried that trick and it put like a .060 shim on the pinion, way too deep...
Still no luck today, I'm about ready to farm it out, I've pulled this fucker apart like 40 times now...
Here's .036 shim on pinion, .008 backlash...

The drive side on the .036 pics is starting to look better, but it looks inconsistent on the gear teeth. It might be the gears (in which case you might have to compromise a bit somewhere).

I'd try again around .033 maybe and try playing with the backlash a bit (maybe try .010-.012" BL)

Is the pattern always about the same in several spots around the ring gear each time?

OK thanks Junkie. Thats one of the things that's been bothereing me is the variation from tooth to tooth on the pattern. The overall pattern is consistant around the gear, runout is .002-.003...

I think I've narrowed it down to .034 or .035, neither of which I can make with the shims I have :annoyed: Gonna call some 4x4 shops tomorrow and see if they have any extra shims laying around.

Hows this working out for you Hahns?

Haven't had a chance to mess with it yet, I did go down to a 4x4 shop and picked up set of pinion shims, I'm going to get back at it tonight.

You will get it.

.036 dont look too bad. id also say i bet you arent gettin enough resistance when your turning it. ball up a shop wrag against thr ring gear on which ever side doesnt suck it in when you turn the pinion. put a lot of pressure on it while turning. dont turn the ring gear against the pinion. the ring gear doesnt drive the pinion, the pinion drives the gear, and thats how you should be getting your pattern. my advice? start at .030. go to .040, then try .025. take the worst one and throw it out. if .030 and .040 look the best go with a .035, then throw the worst out from those 3. just keep crackin at it like that.

Here's .035 pinion shim and .010 backlash. I'm thinking .008 backlash may center the pattern heel to toe.

i would try .036 again. more toward the toe would be better than the heel. youre not gonna see much if any change on .002 backlash change

It's getting better....

It really does take a whole bunch of trials, especially the first time. Be patient. You'll get it. Probably soon.

No, I would leave the pinion where it is and try .008 BL. Mine came out really good after I tightened up the BL.

Probably a dumb time to ask this. The original pinion bearing I'm using for setting it up is toast as far as the rollers are concerned, it has some nice pitting in the rollers, will this effect my pattern significantly? Wish I had a press, I'd just use the new bearings for set up...

it may a little, or maybe not. wont know until you change it and pattern it again
