Hello,
I have an '86 Ranger 4X4 with a 2.9L & 4-sp auto, stock. It has about 206K
and I've owned it since it had 44K. In the last year or so it has developed a habit of shutting off when I shift it into Park or Neutral after I've driven a while or if it's idled for a little while. And then there's the occasional engine dying while driving. I'd love to figure out what it is because I enjoy the truck and wish to keep it. Original engine, transmission and I've only replaced the normal wear items, ignition module and ECM. Those were replace after the truck died on the freeway and wouldn't restart, more than 6 years ago. HELP!

Fuel pressure regulator. Have it tested.

The ignition module (TFI) can cause the same problem, even new ones can go bad quick. Also on my truck the plug in for the wires to the coil was bad and it wouldn't start after I plugged it back in. I could move the plug-in while it was running and it would move the idle up and down.

Check your ignition/key switch

A few years back I had the same problem, it ended up being the ignition switch on the steering column. After you start it, check and see if the switch moves by just touch it. Mine would stall continuously until it was replaced. Also, this was a recall issue a few years back as well.

Thanks

All good ideas and I'll check those connections.I've never suspected the fuel pressure regulator but I'll consider it.Replacing a few things can't hurt they're a lot cheaper than a car payment...thanks again.

I had the exact same problem. The tach would go to zero. It would not restart for 7 tries usually . I changed everything, then figured it out. It was the ignition switch in the steering column. It looks like a bar that slides across contacts. I think it was a ten dollar part. Never had the problem again.
