It would be nice to see what Antiques Roadshow would say about that gun. Maybe History Detectives could tell you more about it.
My opinion and I'm not an expert. Assuming it's not a kit gun and I have to believe what you say. I wonder if it could be a custom buffalo gun. Pre 1870.

I found similar ones for sale on the web $3k-$4k. Still want to take it to the Cabella's guy, but might be a while.
