Muzzle Loader

If it's stamped on the barrel, would sure doubt it's a kit build. Does look modernized a bit. Check with an spurt as mentioned. My Aunt had a double barrel 10 ga with a 22 under she was going to give me but it dissapeared. Never did find out what that was.

It looks pretty authintic to me. I couldn't get a good pic of the barrel stamp. The bore and the rifling are super clean though. Pa-in-law said "sell it and I'll split the money witth you" Gonna have to do some more research.

I would have to agree with earlier assesment of kit rifle. If I remember correctly barrels that old werent rifled and that is definitely a rifled barrel. Way to good of condition to be that old as well. JMO

Froggy, Do a real search on when the early rifled barrels were made and it shows before 1850. This guy was not a manufacturer but a true gun smith. Who know what he built for whom. Seems like all were totally custom to bore and length. As for the stamping on the barrel, try rubbing some white chalk on it and the wiping it off gently.

The barrel is super clean. No chalk needed. It says on one flat "steel" on the top flat it says A. WUERFFLEIN PHILA.

the riflings looked pretty good shape too...

It's super clean. No rust at all. I trust you - you're the doorgunner.

Most modern replicas don't have the orginal maker stamped anywhere on them... aside from Hawkins... and they are just a style of rifle and not really an exact replica anyway. I have a couple Pietta revolvers, both Remington and Colt and while they try to catch the basic idea they make no effort to pose as a authentic pistol.

Some gun makers like those that tried to infringe on really popular guns like the '51 Navy Colts had stampings eluding to the original maker shortly before they were snuffed out by a lawsuit, but really I can't see anyone trying to knock off a rifle like this back in the day.

If it is in fact real, with the sights, double set triggers, and precussion ignition it was a top of the line rifle of its day.

I wouldn't shoot this one until you get it figured out what it is, but blackpowder is a fun thing to get into... I actually just got my fifth one today. The smoke and fire is the best part.

+1 on the smoke. This thing couldnt be so poular that it's a replica. I can't even figure out what the double triggers do.

They are set triggers. The first one "sets" the second. The second trigger usually sends the round downrange just about the time you realize you have any pressure on it.
