as some know me an holyford86 have been building/competing in a tough truck challenge in our town.. we built a 88 b2 an have been recently running with out the 02 sensor, an just a muffler. cats are gone.. its been alright, well today we found a spare o2 sensor an decided to put that in an truck. It runs better, before it would spit an sputter. but my question is its a tough truck every one likes the big loud machines would i loose any power running just a straight pipe or should i put the muffler back on like we did before? the muffler worked but was really quiet.. ive been told that if i run it with a straight pipe iam going to lose all my power an with just a muffler i will have my power back.. so some one answer this for me..

thanks...

Muffler. I, for one, think loud trucks are obnoxious and do nothing to further our image as offroaders or our sport in general. Just about every motorsport out there now has sound restrictions for a reason. As for power loss, you will probably loose a little torque and bottom end with straight pipes. Free flowing exhausts favor high RPM's and high HP.

alright thanks for the reply.. this even is a timed raced.. big mud hole/rock climb, log jump, frame twisters an tire pile.

Muffler, just run it with a flowmaster 40 or 50. It would sound better than straight pipes, straight exhaust also sounds ratty. Also, if you run straight pipes, you could burn a valve in your engine, then it really would sound even worse.

Straight exhausts sound crappy, annoy a large percentage of the population, make you a target for cops, and get on your own nerves on long drives. Run a muffler.

Am I the only one that thinks pullin' a perfectly good Cat' off is retarded? I can't believe much power is gained in doing so, and if your rationale is that the truck is only gonna be driven off-road, then I say what, you don't need to breathe clean air out there?

i run the truck for less than 3 minutes..... the cat was taken off to gain back some of the $$ spent on the truck... thats the only reason..

i strongly dissagree, my truck has headers true duals, 1 cat with restricters and resignated tips.(no mufflers) mine is "tame"has a throaty v8 sound to it with a hint of v6 lol.. but can be heard a mile away when im on it. i think mine sounds nice, if i knew how to post vids i'll be more than glad to take a vid of my truck so u all can hear it.

Nope! Not the only one.

:pissedoff:The same people that don't use mufflers, are seeminly the same idiots that think brighter headlight bulbs are "cool"

..and you ONLY pull a cat if the old beat'er up vehicle is addicted to smoking.

Keep the cat and get a nice cross-flow muffler. Straight pipes are just lame and it's not worth the fix-it-ticket when you get pulled over by an a**hole cop and him finding out your running no cats. I run a 2.25 pipe cat-back and it sounds great!

He said "Tough Truck" challenge (competition). This would indicate the truck isn't going to be used on public streets.

All you guys complaining about being annoyed by loud exhausts, too-bright headlightbulbs, etc. should have nothing to worry about here.
The laws governing cat removal shouldn't apply on a closed-course either (provided the vehicle also is NOT street-registered).

i know it.... people dont read before they post i guess. i would also have to assume that he's on a budget and not gonna go buy a super 40 to put it on a truck that hes gonna beat the shit out of for one night. :fie:

i dont think that you will notice much more than the noise difference no matter which way you decide to run it. for tough trucks around here, everybody runs straight piped. one year there was a clean bone stock explorer that went out and it still had full exhaust. it almost seemed like something was missing. think 'watching tv on mute' so my vote is to cut it off. dont forget ear plugs under your helmet.

thanks 4x4 junkie for clearing this up .. its a COMPETITION every other Sunday an like kunar said it seems outta place. every one has no exhaust an i have a QUIET one haha the truck is not on the road nor is is street legal any more. so it for a 3 minute competition every other weekend an yes i am on a budget.. thanks fellas!
