How do they perform? Im talking about sand at the beach to be specific.

Well it all really depends on the Tire. My Mickey T MTZ's do great in the sand, I can usually leave it in 2wd. Something like a superswamper bogger would possibly just dig in and bury you. I Don't know. I know My Mudders work great in sand though.

its all about airing down the tires the wider you can get them the better

Yup, air em way down and go easy on the throttle so they don't start digging like a shovel.

But will the deep tread of a mud tire dig to much? Would a A/T tire do better?

the tires really arent a big deal i have seen both stuck. if you start to dig in dont gas it it will just make it worse.

Width is the main component. I've taken my Dakota to the beach twice, the first time with 10.50 wide tires and the secondstime with 9.50 wide tires, both with similar tread patterns, the difference that 1" makes is huge.

Radial vs. bias matters here.

A radial MT should do fine in sand (aired down). Bias MTs tend to be the worst in sand.

Ok guys thanks a lot, I like MT's but I drive on the beach quite a bit. Now I only have AT's and there only 8.5" wide. I get stuck easy if Im not careful. Its time for new tires and Im ready for some MT's.
