After replacing the input shaft on the M5OD trans I am having trouble getting the trans to seat to the engine bell housing. I have aligned the trans as accurately as possible but can not get it the last 3/8 inch. I can just see the flywheel through the gap from the trans to the bell housing. Before placing the engine in the vehicle I took off the flywheel and pressure plate and slid it onto the trans input shaft. This was to bench check the fit before installing the trans. Somehow the trans will not seat. Any ideas? I've been at this all day. Good think I am retired.

Is the new input shaft the same diameter/length as the old one? Might be interference from the pilot bearing. :dntknw:

Use the clutch alignment tool. $4 well spent.

When installing the clutch I used the clutch alignment tool to center the clutch when mounting the pressure plate. With the small amount left to seat (3/8 inch) I am sure I am in the spline part of the clutch. The input shaft was identical to the one removed and when the engine was out I took the flywheel/pressure plate and slid them onto the input shaft just to make sure they would fit. I did notice during this process that alignment was critical when getting the flywheel bearing on the input shaft. But I have moved the trans around in as straight as possible and I can not get it to fully seat.

Hmmm,
I've had to wriggle transmissions around a bit to get them to line up and seat. Are you doing this by yourself? I know it’s a pain to push/wriggle/rotate one by just one person. If you already checked all dimensions and fit then that's all it can be, just a bit off alignment

I have it sitting on two floor jacks and have it adjusted to line up with the bell housing. I'll try some more tomorrow.

You don't have two sets of alignment dowels in, do you?

I tried to use some small bolts that I placed in the bell housing to help aline the trans. I try some wooden dowels.

Maybe the splines aren't lined up? Id try to spin the output shaft while trying to mate them?

That's great but doesn't really answer my question.

The sleeves in two holes. Sometimes they stay in the block, sometimes they come out with the trans. You don't have 2 sets in there do you? That would stop it just about 3/8" apart.

Well, worked all day and have finally got the trans attached. I decided to pull out the engine aned check the clutch alighment. I appeared ok when I inserted the plastic alignment tool. However I decided to reset the clutch but this time I used the old transmission input shaft that I replaced. My thinking is that it would hold the alignment better than the plastic tool. When I was done I put in the plastic tool and it slid in a lot easier. When I put back in the engine and tried to attached the trans it seated in after a few tries Not sure that this was the solution or I just got lucky.

My next issure: when I installed the last bolt (upper left) I could not get it to grab. I suspect that the sheet metal that is sandwiched between the trans and bell housing got bent and is blocking the bolt. That is tomorrows item to resolve.
