Here's another good thread on this topic:
http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44957

I checked my mileage again a couple weeks ago. Two tanks (of gas) ago, I got 19.4mpg. My last tank was 23.22. It all depends on how much freeway driving I do.

I drive mostly freeway miles. I've not been towing anything, just daily driver.

Learning Hyper-miling driving habits can really increase your gas mileage. If you have a stick shift, you have A LOT more control over the engine RPM. Each night, there is 1.2 miles that I can coast without using the accelerator. That works out to 6 miles a week, for "free", or idle speed.

I've only hit the 24mpg mark one time. It was hard and I was driving like Grandma. But it can be done.

Here's a Google search for those who are interested:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=hypermiling&aq=0&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=hypermil&gs_rfai=

Here's the Wiki on it:

It works for me.

I get 15-17 mpg, at 65-70 mph, 90% highway... Its 99 4.0 ext cab 4x4 auto with 31's... oh and hubs locked in fulltime. I also have 3" bodylift with no front bumper! lol, like a brick in the air

Mine got about 17-18 in Phx, AZ and when someone stole my gas cap and I could not find a replacement, 21mpg. I may lose my new gas cap. : )

Just went over 16mpg on this last trip. 4.0 + 4x4 + (Probably, just haven't looked to see what they actually are) 4.10 gears...

About 100 of those miles were goin' 75 on the interstate. So I've found out that I get better mileage going above 65mph...

I get 15.5~18 miles to the gallon, it just depends on how hot or cold it is with our lovely weather fronts in Michigan. That's with a 2.5" Flowmaster 40 and a Volant intake. I'm a little lead footed too, so I'm amazed I get pretty decent millage. With the summer coming around it'll be going up the about 16.5~17 mpg. I don't drive very much on the highway but I've done 18 and almost 19 mpg sometimes on some rare treks. Guess that shows how much routine maintenance helps.

just yesterday

255 miles on fillup....12.28 gallons

20.76 mpg 80% around town....

Tires...215's

RA 3.45

upshift shift @roughly 2100 max 90% of the time....

(Oops!...I guess I've got the wrong engine...)

Please delete this post....

Hi folks:

I bought my Ranger last July, It is a 2001 4.0 SOHC, 4-WHD, auto trans,4-dr. There is a fiberglass shell over the back for my tools. So far with some 13000 miles on this machine I have a high of 21 and a low of 14. So far this year I am averaging 15 between city and freeway driving. I just installed new plugs installed at the 100000 point.

Am I just paranoid about poor milage or sshould I just enjoy the ride?

P.S. Had the overhead council and full pwr, leather buckets installed and am real glad I did! Boy those 60-40 seats suck.

Ron V :) :)

95 2wd ext cab 4.0 auto 3.08 gears

19 city

22 hwy

doesn't seem to matter how I drive it, those stay plus or minus .5 mpg

Back again... 02 ext cab 4x4

4.0, auto, probably 4.10's

17.025 mpg... finally got above 17... all of those miles were 65-75mph... so once again, i get better mileage haulin' ass.

I've got the 2.9L but when I got the truck I replaced the whole ignition system (coil, wires, cap, rotor, and plugs). I upgraded the coil and overgapped the plugs by hand. Result? Improved my MPGs by 2-3. I started with about 12 MPGs and am now at 16 after the whole tune-up :icon_thumby: Now all I gotta do is figure why the heck am I running on 5 cylinders!!
