MPGs

I'm getting a whopping 18 city, about 21 hwy with a 2.9, 33's and 4.56s.

90 Ranger 2.9 5 speed 4x4 3.73s 32" tires
filled up today: 17.3 mpg
much of the driving was a 18 mile round trip commute to work at 55-60mph and weather has been in the 20s F lately, using straight gasoline

filled up two weeks ago 15.3 mpg
Same commute, slightly colder temperatures, using e10 gasoline

I normally shift around 2500 +-200 except merging onto interstate then I sometimes wind it out to 3500+

tire pressure is 5lbs under max, oil was just changed, air filter is still like new. so i think im gonna do my plugs and wires and hope foe the best. should i look at some better wires?? i know plugs are basically all the same and the oems are prolly the best. and as for shifting, i usually shift in between 2000-2500. and in the mornings when the truck is cold i go closer to 3 to get it to warm up faster

How long do you let it warm up before you drive it or do you plug it in? Cause I noticed in 0 degree weather if I started and just went I was achieving about 10mpg.

And yes Motorcraft/autolite plugs and wires are probably the best. And be sure to gap them properly.

I have a 91 Ranger, 5spd, 4.0, 2WD, I get any where between 15-21MPG depending what I am doing with my truck and how hard I drive it....

I recently replaced my plugs and wires with Bosch wires and Autolite XP (part#xp105), I noticed a small difference, but nothing significant... Also keep in mind my ranger is bare bones stock.... The only thing I did was remove my air box and replace the old filter with an element filter and allowed more air flow. Oh and I chopped the muffler off and straight piped it from the cat to the tail pipe...

There are a lot of variations that will change one's average MPG. Driving conditions, driving habits, maintenance, modifications... Just keep that in mind...

i live near cleveland. so i guess that could be. and my exhaust was chopped somewhere behind the cab and i put a glasspack fuffler on it.

The glass pack isn't helping your mileage or low-end torque. Probably making you oush it a lot harder than you need to.
You'd do better with a proper exhaust.
As for the intake stuff, just stick with a nice clean NAPA Gold air filter in the stock air box.
It can't flow any more air than it'll get with this set-up.
Besides, even a dirty air filter will have little effect on the mileage of a fuel injected vehicle.

i just changed the fuel filter, changed the plugs to bosch +2 platinum plugs but no new wires they were good, air filter was good and i think i'm getting probably 15-17 around town and 20 ish on the highway....my new 4.0 gets better fuel mileage then my old 83 2.3L.

how could my glass pack be hurtint it. its just a straight round pipe. aand idk bout the fuel filter. i have one at home, ill have to replace it and see if that helps.and my filter last i checked looked brand new

well here is the update. i'vebeen checkin my mileage and i think right now im getting 16 to the gallon. i havent done anything differently other than shift at 2500 and i dont jump on throttle so hard. . . but im going to change the coolant and fuel filter, and ill see what i get out of that. and im thinking about swapping out my mechanical fan for some electric ones
