Mpg

Yeah I think they are 16's but you could pull off a similar look by levelling the truck with 31's..

Id really like to do it. Hopefully the 31's don't drop my mpg by 5 like others have said, because right now I'm only getting 15 in the city

Install a great big in-your-face vacuum gauge. Drive carefully so the gauge dips a minimum amount.

Sigh my buddy has some 31's for sale right now for 16 inch rims. Are we SURE I will lose 5mpg if I mount them?

I read this whole thread...did I overlook the post where you mentioned what tires you're running now?

Regardless of whatever tire size you're running now, 31's most certainly will NOT lower your MPG by 5.

They wont hurt it that bad unless you have a pre-existing problem in the motor. Such as vacuum leak somewhere.

I mentioned doing some mods to increase gas mileage and a few people essentially talked me out of that and then mentioned that bigger tires will lower my mpg by like 6. I have stock tires now

LOL @6mpg. if you run 33's or 35's with factory gearing and beat it like a 2 dollar whore then yes, all kinda lower mpg's. You will see maybe 1-2 mpg drop with 31's depnding on the quality and type of the 31's and how you drive them, Seriously though highway mileage should increase just a hair. Assuming your engine is in good proper working order.

Yeah I only noticed a 1 mpg drop in city and 3mpg gain on the highway. But I drive pretty easy and have a 3.0L and manual so I chose my shift points. you will notice less of a drop with an auto transmission in town because it can shift smoother even with more of a load.

I would like to know your thoughts on the following mods to increase mpg:

Filter
Muffler
Electric fan
Programmer

Programmer is your best bet. By filter I hope you just mean a clean filter, any else wont do you any good, you dont push enoug power. the electric fan will net a few gains. As far as exhaust pretty much a muffler will be all that helps you. but not much at all. The programmer will be about 550 for a good one preferably an SCT xcal it will get you at best 3-5mpg increase. But keep in mind as you change things such as gears and tires it will affect mpg a little. Sometimes better, sometimes worse.

There are other options such as non ethanol fuel that you can find at a co-op, egr delete depending on the age of your vehicle. Cleaning the entire intake system, IAC TPS MAF everything, fuel injectors pull them all out and clean them in kerosene or diesel. New plugs, wires, possibly coils. Have your cats analyzed and decide what you want to dowith them. Having your valves checked and adjusted might help. Theres a thread somwhere about hypermiling if its that big of a deal, but your wanting to mad too,

YOU NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU, EFFICIENCY OR CAPABILITY.

I'm looking for a good mix of the two. I just recently tuned the truck up so it runs great. I'll pop in a stock replacement filter and skip the muffler. I really want to do the electric fan and programmer so I'll pick those up for sure.

My truck is obd1 so I don't think I can get a xcal. I was looking at the "Jet Chips EZ tune"

Anyone know if the newer rangers come with 16's?

the newest, as in 2011 model year have 16's as well as many earlier years, the common 5 spoke design was usually a 16, my 02 has 16's from the factory. . . i think it depends alot on year to year as well as how the vehicle was equipped

Yeah I think everything 05 and newer has 16's Your right about obd1, xcal wont work. But i would be very choosy about your chip, while alot cheaper than a programmer you wont get quite the tune. Most of them are mail order tunes and arent very efficient. Be specific about your vehicles specs, very specific when ordering.

With an OBDI I would highly doubt any chip will give you any worthwhile gain as it has less sensors and the computer controls much less its almost pointless to chip it, thats why they don't make chips for them.

Any ranger or explorer from 95+ will have had the option of 16's.
