Mpg

I think the intake and exhaust should improve torque and throttle response which is what's most important at low rpm, part throttle driving. Also the tuner should advance the timing and lean the fuel mixture a bit, increasing power and using less fuel.

Let me ask you this, your throttle's job is to restrict air flow. So why would a device such as an air intake that reduces intake restriction have any benefit when you're using the throttle to do the exact opposite?

Bottom line is there's simply not enough air moving into the engine or exhaust moving out of the engine at lower RPMs for either of those to have any benefit. If you google around for the guys who get the best MPGs, you'll find lots of them building a "warm air intake" for their cars.

Trust me, the hours you could spend at work earning the money to buy the intake/exhaust could just as easily be spent learning to drive better and you'll actually notice an improvement from doing that.

I know your pain bought my first set of stock tires for my full size in forever. There's a lot of resistance in big aggressive tires both rolling and aerodynamic. Hadn't thought about only running defrost when I needed it that's a good idea. You have to ask yourself if your trying to save money or gas.Mods like an electric fan will never pay you back. What can help if you do a lot of highway driving is make sure you have that little air damn that people like me take off.

It's a conspiracy, man! The government mandates all these new additives for fuel which results in worse fuel economy so we're forced to buy more gas which means more gas tax revenue. That's their evil plan for sure!

(I wrote that as a joke, but now that I read it...I may be on to something)

I think you are....

The government makes more on the sale of a gallon of gas than the gas station does by a considerable margin. IIRC they make about as much on a gallon of gas as the "big oil" companies do. Strange wonder that when Congress "investigates" record profits by "big oil" they don't find anything.

But I'm getting a little off topic...

Excellent post, thank you. The only thing I wanted to comment on here is about the heater controls. I'm almost certain the ac only runs when defrost has been selected, I don't think it runs when just the heat is on. My ranger is a 96 btw

a/c compressor runs in all positions except for face only and feet only, and off of course. . . i idled my truck in the driveway with the hood up and selected each fan/heater control and looked to see if the a/c compressor clutch was engaged, i was suprised to find this is the case in nearly all positions except the 2 i mentioned, you can also verify this in your manual....as a result i keep my selector in the "face" or "feet" setting unless i need the defroster

My 95 is the same way. It's downright freaky.

man i would love to get over 15:thefinger: hell on the interstate going 65 i can get 22-23 out of her

maybe its cause this carb doesnt like cold mornings and i dont neither, so i let her warm up real good. maybe the fm146 swap will help out some. i want to go 33's to 35's and some 4.56's but dam im aready getting shitty mpg's now, i would have to buy stock in bp(can be had cheaper now lmao:icon_rofl:) i think my fan clutch is bad, muffler is goin to shit, and my plug wires prolly could use a changn. o well, after i get the trans in, i have enough to keep me busy

Well I am not sure when the switched it, but I know my 99 the A/C pump runs as long as the blower is on. Except feet and face only, all other positions it will cycle.

yea i read the sticker on the gas pump the other day for the first time, and it listed the taxes...about 1.75 worth on 2.60 worth of gas...what a rip off

"roadway tax" wtf the roads around here are shit

I noticed the same thing on mine which (obviously) is an 03. But after reading your post, it made me start thinking. Im probably going to install a switch that interupts the a/c clutch.....now i just need to figure out a way to keep the idle from going up aswell when it "calls" for the compressor the be on....this might get a bit tricky finding that wire.
