I am probably moving to Louisiana in the next month or so, I have moved several times but this will be the first time I do it as an adult and with vehicles. I need some advice on getting everything set up and swapped over, like process for the DMV, hidden costs, etc.
Any insight would be appreciated. It is going to be strange moving again, I thought I had finally found a place to settle in at but I am kind of excited for the move. I just hate losing all the contacts and friends I have made over the last few years. But sometimes a new start is a good thing and I am going to embrace it as such, A postive mind attitiude is half the battle. Now I just need to get the Ranger running to make the trip, hate to not get to break the motor in better but I don't really have a choice.

I am also a college student so that is going to complicate things a bit.

Sorry to hear that you're moving down here ;missingteeth;

anyhow....you have a certain number of months to switch to Loiusuana license plates...

you'll probably have to go to Baton Rouge DMV to get La. plates......

you have the usual handful of fees($25 here/$30 there/etc) & we pay-by-the-year for our plates--averages about $80/or less for a 4 year plate for one vehicle....

vehicle has to pass a stinking Emissions/Safety Inspection every stinkin year/$20 bucks a year... (20 year+ vehicles are exempt from emissions/but still have to pass the Safetyportion/brakes/lights/seat belts/horn/turn signals/etc :yahoo: )

we pay a state tax on every purchase & a few cents for city taxes on each purchase....

politicians are about as crooked as in Chicaaaa-go.........

resident Cajun people have heavy French accents/can be hard to understand until you are hear a while (like living in France in some South Louisiana towns)

drive the speed limit/tickets start at $110 bucks.... :annoyed:

Once you get used to the spices...the food is GREAT...

hurricanes s-uc-k....but you learn to deal with em/same as the politicians...Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahhahahahahhaaaaaaaa!

Make sure you don't live near a levy. Hurricanes like to f*** those up everytime they come through. Might want to invest in a generator. Power loss from storms on the gulf coast are very common.

Yeah, I bought 10 gallons of gas for the generator, filled my Ranger, Jeep and motorcycle up, and had 70 bottles of water. Also had the water tank on the camper full and 15 gallons of water in jugs.

Nothing happened. So I'm slowly using up the water jugs on my garden and chickens. Filled back up with one of the gas cans today.

Haha, I've got a few other guys in the insurance biz like me that are down there right now praying for the 'canes to come through. We make money off y'all :) If you don't have LA insurance already, get it BEFORE you get wind of the next hurricane. If a binding restriction gets placed in your area, you're SOL if you want insurance for house, car, motorcycle, etc.

PS, Flood insurance is federally regulated. Call them if you need it!

That stands for ALL you cajun bastards! ;missingteeth;

Well i am going to be way north west of you, I will be about 6 miles from the Texas border, it's about 20miles to Orange, TX.

My grandpa used to live outside of West Monroe so I am kind of used to the cajun language (not from him but from his neghbors)

I was supposed to make a trip down there yesterday but got a BAD stomach bug.

Hey rockin86ranger, I live over in Port Arthur and not to far away from Orange. Thanks

Ohhhhhh......way west of Lake Charles.....and Orange Tx is a nice town...

hope you get to feeling better....about 4 ounces of wine might drown that bug......

Isn't part or all of New Orleans below sea level? Why would anyone start a town
right on the coast that was below sea level? I just never understood this reasoning. I'm assuming it has something to do with NO being a major port and all but couldn't they start that city inland on higher ground?

well.......what happened was......the French, being as lazy as they are, initially occupied the "highest terrain in the area" of the Mississippi River near Lake Pontchatrain...

built a "small Fort" and started a trading settlement....

a hurricane came along---blew everything down....so they said "Aucun tetre ne contient les mots!" (Let's haul in a lot of some dirt!).

Then the Spanish whupped the French & hauled in some more dirt.....

then the French took it back from.......

thennn.......the Spanish.....

then the French.............

then we Americansbought the hole in the ground from the French & decided to build levees to keep the water out of New Orleans since there wasn't enough dirt in the world to fill up the hole....

then the levees broke............

then....later, they broke again.....

then.......

then.........

then.......the Saints lost their season opener to the Redskins(who originally lived on the Mississippi River, but were forced to move to Washington)

there......

Back in the late 60's or early 70's , Led Zeppelin come out with a song about New Orleans? I forget the actual name of the song but I remember the Main lyric, "If it keeps on raining levy is gonna break" and " if the levy breaks got no place to stay". :headbang:
