I currently have a 2006 Ranger XL Crew Cab, it has a 2.3l DOHC Duratec engine mated to a Eaton Fuller FSO 2405 transmission, 5 speed. I am looking to change it, preferably to one that has a transfer case bolted to it, my question is what are the transmission options for this particular motor?

Ford never offered that engine in a 4x4 vehicle, at least in the US.

The M5OD has an integrated bell, so you need a transmission case for a 2.3 DOHC to use an M5OD. They are simple transmissions, so if you get one of those, get a 4x4 output shaft, and a 4x4 extension housing, you could easily make a 4x4 trans in an afternoon, if you have a press.

But to the best of my knowledge you can't just go to a junk yard and pull an already assembled RWD trans and transfer case as an assembly, ready to go, that will work with that engine.

If FWD is ok, the Escapes had AWD CD4Es and a manual offering, but I am unsure of the trans designation, I don't think it is an MTX. But in a Ranger a trans axle is probably less than desirable.

Said hes got an 06 crew cab, doubt hes from US

That is correct, I am actually in Mexico, pretty much was raised in Brownsville Texas though.

I do have another question, what was the original manual transmission that came with the Rangers 2.3l Duratec?

And can a M5OD be bolted directly to this engine or would an adapter plate be needed?
Or as adsm08 stated, I need the 2.3l Transmission case and have the tail housing and tail shaft switched from another M5OD to have a transfer case?

It's an M5OD, just a different M5OD that only bolts to the Duratec and is only available in 2wd. So to make it 4 wheel drive you simply need ANY 4x4 M5OD as an output shaft and tailhousing donor.
