i need some advice...

got a 2002 4.0 sohc with the 5 spd auto. 140k on the truck.

The timing chain guides on the truck are DONE.

options:

1. get timing chains and guides replaced for 2,000 by a mechanic because i just dont have the ability to do it myself

2. buy a used motor with 80k or so and drop it in myself for $1000

3. buy a reman motor for 2 grand, and a few hundred bucks more for gaskets and other misc things.

my prob im having is putting 2 grand into a motor that already has 140k on it when theres a possibilty it wont last a whole lot longer, and you really dont know what your getting with a used motor. I dont have the money for a new truck so thats not an option.

so.. what would you do?

#3 sounds like a better option than #1, as long as it comes with the updated guides. With #3, you'll have the same thing as #1 except with 140k less miles for about the same price.

#2 might be the best deal though, as long as you get an engine from a 2005+ truck.
