Hey just wondering what involved in running the timing belt open. The chiltons book only shows me how to index the cam , crank, and auxillary pulleys with the rear cover on???? What if I dont want the cover at all???:dntknw:

What kind of gunk do you want running through your timing belt? Small animals? Pebbles? Automotive fluids? Getting a pebble (or a stray bolt) caught in the timing belt is quite likely to break or stretch it. It's not going to run well like that...

Use the covers. They exist for a reason.

Yeah, not a good idea on a street driven vehicle. Some cut the very top off the cover to expose the camshaft sprocket. Most do this when they have an adjustable cam, but some do it because they think it looks cool to watch the cam spinning around. shady

Yeah i know its corny but I dig it too:headbang: Got a cover out of the junk yard today. When I pulled that crank cover off the front, it had a small crack in it. I hate to admit it, but I think a rock bounced up into my cover less bottom pulley and cracked it a little.I guess you guys were right about the whole cover thing?:nono: A friend is welding it up for me and Im getting it back tomarrow. I guess im learning the hard way??? Do any of you folks know if the seal for the crank and the seal for the auxillary shaft are the same?? I got a 2.3 liter long block on the stand and putting it all back together. Fixed the detent rod in the trans too so now I got reverse. The victories are coming slow ,but im making progress.,Thanx for the help guys, this site is the best!!!:beer::beer:
