I hooked everything up correctly to do a malfunction indicator lamp test and when i turned the truck on, the fuel pump gave 2 whiring sounds (normally only one) and the check engine light went away imediately. after that, nothing happend... i sat there for 5 miniutes staring at the cel and nothing. am i doing something wrong or is something wrong with my truck?

did you use a volt meter? maybe you should try watching the meter instead of the CEL. Sounds like you didn't have it hooked up right though. When i test mine you hear all kinds of clicks while it's going through it's diagnostics. then after about 30 seconds it starts throwing the codes. maybe try using a test light, or just go buy a scan tool :)

im pretty sure the diagram in the tech forums is showing the front side of the connector, where you can actually plug something in. maybe thats where you went wrong :)

? there is no place to plug it into. there is a black plastic cap over the wiring... the cap says "EEC Testing"

take the cap off? you had the right 2 connectors in your hand. a scan tool plugs right into them. or you could do it from the back and just mirror the diagram in the tech forums when you hook it up.

why are you trying to read codes in the first place? is something wrong with ur truck?

were you able to pull the codes? maybe take it to a local parts store and ask them to read the codes for you. are you sure it's burning oil, or is it leaking? One thing you might check or just replace is the PCV valve. rough idle could be a million things, but most people check/clean the IAC and MAF first.

i still cant read it! i wil take a pic of the set up on here tonight, but is there a thread on the forum that tells how to take out/ clean the pcv valve?

just replace it, it's just a couple bucks. i'm not sure where it's located on your's but mines in between 2 hoses and really hard to see, took me a while to find it. it was behind my intake manifold. just so you know, the pcv probably won't help the idle, and it's only a slight chance it will help with oil consumption. probably more like bad rings causing the oil to get burned.
