I have a 1998 Ranger , 3.0 , automatic . It has on occasion over the last 3 yr.s or so (more in warm weather ) had a problem when starting and when it does it will spit sputter and missvery badly untill it clears it's throat and then it will run fine. The only codes it ever gives are egr valve, since replaced and cylinder misfire . Has anyone out there had a similar problem and if so what might be a possible solotion?

Hello PappyJack, and Welcome to The Ranger Station!

I suspect that your fuel pressure is bleeding down.

Try this before every cold start:

Turn the key to Run, do not crank the starter.
Listen to the fuel pump HUM for 2-3 seconds.
Turn the key to Off.
Repeat, repeat, THEN crank over the starter.

If that fixes the problem, I encourage you to continue "priming" the fuel system at least once, maybe twice before each start.

The list of causes is short:
leaking fuel injector (might be able to tell which one by "reading" the condition of the spark plugs)
Bad fuel pump check valve (part of fuel pump)
Bad fuel pressure regulator (part of fuel pump assembly)

Connecting a fuel pressure gage at the fuel rail will show this condition if you really need convincing.

I feel it's a good practice to prime the fuel system on all fuel injected vehicles before starting.

+1 ^^

What were the EGR codes??

There are a few codes that are EGR valve related but replacing EGR valve won't fix the problem long term.
EGR system has 3 main "parts"
EGR valve
EGR control/modulator, computer uses this to open and close EGR valve, using engine vacuum
DPFE sensor, computer uses this to determine if EGR valve is opening and how far it is opening.
