Hey all.

I have a 93 ranger with the 4.0. I have been getting around 16mpgs with it and i don't think that's to bad but last tank i got 11.6mpgs with it and i am not sure whats wrong, that's why i came to trs. :) It has new plugs, wires, air filter, oil change, and a clean iac valve. I was looking in the engine bay today trying to figure out the problem and i found this

In case you cant tell by the pics the wire comes out of the harness that connects to the coil pack

Tried to find out where the other end of the wire was and couldn't find anything in the engine bay or in my Haynes manual.

It accelerates fine and idles fine around 900-1000 rpms. Ive been reading how to clean my maf. I herd one one site let the tips of it sit in a bowl of vinegar for like 2 hours then blow dry it off but that dosen't sound to good so i am not sure lol.

Thanks for your help.

Rusty

well i would assume that wire is causing something wrong with your coil pack leading to perhaps the crappy gas mileage. I will try to check my service manual for my 97 and see if I can find where it goes. I recognize that clip so it has to be something important...

thanks for the quick response. That's why i came here lmao. Hope its in your service manual becasue 11.6mpg's is killing me at 17. lol. Hope to hear from you soon.

thanks
Rusty

well I just took a quick look in my manual and in the 4.0 section on ignition it does not show what that connector is for. I will try and take a look under my hood and see what I can find. Does it have any part numbers available? If it did, that could certainly help figure out what it is and what it is doing.

I went out for about 30min and looked around my engine bay for the other wire that hooks to that connector but no luck anywhere. There are no part numbers on the connector or anything so.... lol

I took more pics. Sorry for the blurry one.

Thanks Hope to figure this out and hope it solves my bad mpg problem.

Thanks Rusty

P.S. Sorry for the big pics not sure why photo bucket didn't re size them.

Found out what the wire goes to. Its a round cylinder shaped thing on the bracket that holds the coil pack. you can see it in the first pic in the last set. Dont know what it is or what it does but the wire broke off from there. whats it called? and how much to replace if i even need it. And could that be causing my sudden drop of 5mpg?

Thanks
Rusty

It should be a radio interference suppressor

ummm ok. Well i have perfect reception with my radio but i don't know :dntknw:
If that's what it is do you guys/girls have any idea why i could drop 5mpg :pissedoff::pissedoff: in a week that's crazy. Hope to hear from you soon so i can get this figured out.

Thanks Rusty

How's it running otherwise? Still have the same 'power'?

Any check engine lights?
Check the Plugs, Filters, Wires etc?

And are you going by Miles per tank or Miles per gallon?

Runs Perfect, idles fine and have great power like it should. No codes at all, light not on. I have changed the plugs, wires, oil change, iac cleaning, would a clogged fuel filter be causing this. Haven't changed it yet and was thinking about it. Maybe a dirty maf. how do you clean one of those?? Sorry for the newb ?'s.

Thanks again

Rusty

wella dirty fuel filter you would normally feel a drop in power but it could also lead to bad gas milage too. wouldnt hurt to change it as you have changed all the other filter and they are relitivly cheap.

alright i guess i will be picking up one of those tomm then. thanks and ill report back. How do you clean the maf. Never cleaned one and don't want to mess up. IDK i am just pulling ideas out of my head trying to figure out why i got 11mpg.

Thanks Rusty

Just curious but have you checked your MAF to see how dirty it is? I think you can get some MAF cleaner from your local auto shop. Its similar to carb cleaner. Directions should be on the can but I think you just spray it in at idle. On my truck it says not to use Carb cleaner right on the MAF.

Also since your keeping up with general maintence. Have you changed your air filter recently.

thanks. I cleaned the maf last night and reset the comp and it seems to do a lot better in the power department. Yet to see if its better in the mpg department. Will get back to you. God i feel stupid i checked the tech library to lol.

pce Rusty
