Anyone know where I can get a mini spool for the rear of my 1990 farm truck. 100% off road and it has (i believe) an 8.8" rear. I thought about just welding the spider gears (Lincoln locker) but a spool is fairly cheap. Anyone?

Google "8.8 31 Spline Mini Spool"

I see a bunch of them on Ebay but not sure which one to get. Some seem light weight made for the street, I need one that won't break. Anyone have experience with spools?

That's kind of the Achilles Heel of mini spools. They put ALL the stress on the cross pin. It's just part of how they work. It's less of an issue for an open diff because the power has somewhere to go (like when one wheel begins to slip). I doubt there's much of a strength difference between them.

If brute strength is what your after, weld it all up.

i have an almost brand new mini spool for a 31 spine 8.8 ford axle. i dont want it. because i got a posi to replace it.

Don't get a mini spool. Look into the Aussie Locker. Amazingly quiet and they just plain WORK. Plus it doesn't kill your tires (not that it's on the street much anyways)

The truck is never on the street. It hauls logs, firewood and dead deer on my 58 acre property and surrounding properties. Just want something cheap. Now I'd like an Aussie on my ranger though. Looking for a rear locker for the ranger as we speak. The ranger is a 28 spline though.

Weld it. (8.8 mini-spools are junk) Weld the spiders to the side gears, and weld both to the carrier so everything is solid. Just make sure to not weld the cross pin so that you can remove the shafts in the future if you ever need to.
