So I used to live in Michigan and now I live in South Carolina and I have a 1997 ranger with a 4.0 that has like 141k on it. Basically I need to drive up to Michigan this summer, its 850 miles and I'm worried about the truck, it runs great, no problems, but I feel like she's to high mileage to tackle the trip....how many miles do you guys have, and do you take big trips with big miles? just looking for some advice.

Only 141?

a 4.0 is considered worn when it hits about 400.

Mine rolled 300,000 a short time ago. it burns some oil on starting due to old valve seals. That's it.

The cylinders prolly still have the X-hatching in them! If the engine is in good tune take it anywhere you want...It'll be Ok. I don't even tune one till it gets more miles than that on it...However I would have already swapped out the thermostat on an 18 year old vehicle.
Big JIm

most engines predating 2002 will last a long time, most engines predating 1987 (iron blocks I mean), will last you for as long as you take care of them.

Aluminum blocks wear out quicker then iron. (as in a 3 yr to 7 yr ratio, as in the alumn. will wear out in 30 years roughly, and need replaced, while an iron block will wear out in around 70 years, thus the older early 1900's Ford's still runnin on the original engine!_

well dang sounds good to me, looks like i'll be going to michigan in the ranger for a while longer. Thanks guys

Well i got more places to wheel up in michigan, i got nowhere to go down here

I'm not too familiar with the Anderson area, but there's tons of places around here to wheel in gilbert, saluda and swansea. Not too much rock climbing type wheelin, but definitely lots of mud

nice, gotta love some mud. there is one place around here called gulches but i havent been yet, everything else is privately owned.

Got a 1996 4.0L 148,000 on the dash and made it from north Carolina straight to mobile alabama, then later that month alabama to texas stopped 4 a night. Now im in phoenix arizona... granted my truck only seen 1 snow storm so no rust... but im sure u be fine as long at u do regular maintenance... BTW long drive across desert heat= leaking oil =( first one look like like a valve cover gasket

i start worrying when the oil pressure is below 5 psi at hot idle:dunno:
