mileage

I am wondering what kind of gas mileage a 4.0 will get. I searched the forums and the best i could find was the thread about mileage while towing.

Basically I am trying to decide ranger vs f150, if the mileage isn't going to be too much different I will probably go with the f150.

I know the EPA numbers, but I was wondering what real world, observed numbers were.

The best gas mileage I have gotten with my 4.0L 4x4 5 speed manual Ranger was 20.2 mpg. That was going 70-75 mph, 2Hi, top gear without stopping (long trip dry roads). Compared to the F150, one of my friends just traded in his 2006 F150 5.4L, 4x4 in which he claims he could get 20mpg. F150 5.4L vs 4.0L Ranger, for fuel economy, the F150 is a win in my book (much more power same mileage). I chose the Ranger because I hate automatics. Hope that helps. Winter gas mileage is much worse (obviously), but I'm sure this is the case for the F150 too.

(Edit): I've only had the ranger for almost 2 months. On average I've been getting 13-16mpg allowing the truck to warm up when its below 15F outside and using 4Hi when necessary.

Sadly, most 4.0L Rangers, and F-150s get about the same mileage... I can get 20 on the highway at 55mph in 4th gear... Usually between 15-18 in town...

Mine might be the exception to the rule- I get 20-21 on every tank with a 2WD. It got 23.8 ONCE on the highway with a tailwind, usually 22.something on the highway. The bigger difference is that my ranger gets 21 or so on EVERY tank- local or otherwise- the f-150 will get 19 or 20 on the highway, but 13-14 in the city. Add 4WD and expect about a two MPG difference...
